René RIESEL has been sentenced to seven (7) months of jail because he destroyed Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) in a Novartis "on ground" crop and also in the CIRAD (Centre International de recherche Agronomique pour le développement) laboratory, in the south of France, in 1998.
On the contrary of José Bové, René Riesel is a clear anticapitalist militant. He always refused to claim for a presidential pardon at the french president Chirac, and he rejects any kind of "support" from political parties, official unions or reformist groups like ATTAC.
He is now in jail since the 1st of december. He shares a cell with another prisonner. He is allowed to walk in a yard inside the prison for 1 hour each day. The rest of the times he reads and writes. He is allowed to meet with his wife one time a week for 40 minutes. Another friend is keeping his flock (René is sheperd). The Jail Management refused him to get out for the Christmas holidays.
HE NEEDS READINGS AND LETTERS. In the jail, he makes turning around the jail partners his readings, amongst them Tatchanka (the newsletter of the CNT AIT Gards’Union).
René Riesel is suported by the fellow workers of the Gard, Nîmes and Alès CNT AIT Union.
